Free sat nav packs to combat car crime
Satellite navigation systems may be the ideal gadget for caravan insurance customers making their way to holiday park destinations, but they also highly sought after by car thieves, police have warned.
Most vehicle crime involves crooks taking sat navs and valuables from unattended cars, and many motorists are making it all too easy by leaving the items on display.
As a result, Lancashire Police are running a week of events to help raise awareness of the threat, and caravan insurance customers in the region may wish to make the most of it.
Officers will be issuing free satellite navigation packs to owners, each containing a duster to wipe tell-tale sucker marks caused by the devices off drivers' windscreens.
General advice on protecting cars against thieves will also be issued to the public, and new Safeplate screws will be fitted to help stop the theft of car registration plates.
"We will be raising general awareness among the driving public about the importance of not leaving valuables on display in their vehicles," said Sergeant Alison Harris from Chorley Neighbourhood Policing Team.
The theft of satellite navigation systems is a common issue across the UK, and Merseyside Police urged motorists last week to be particularly vigilant in the light of a recent rise in incidents.
