Tracking system helps recover five caravans
Caravan insurance customers looking for extra peace of mind over the security of their vehicles might consider investing in a tracking device after their effectiveness was demonstrated in Durham.
Officers worked with UK stolen vehicle recovery expert Tracker to help recover £100,000 worth of property in the last 12 months, including five caravans.
The company installs hidden tracking units in cars, caravans and bicycles to help catch criminals who make off with the vehicles, and 15 arrests were secured with the help of the devices.
In one instance, the recovery of one caravan saw police discover five others that had been stolen.
Inspector Andrew Huddleston, of Durham Constabulary Road Policing Unit, said that Tracker was a "highly effective crime fighting tool".
While full caravan insurance cover can help to soften the blow of having a mobile home or vehicle stolen, tracking devices can help police in ensuring that the property is recovered and that thieves are caught and stopped.
Tracker recently warned motorists not to become complacent after figures released by the Home Office revealed a 12 per cent drop in vehicle thefts for the year ending June 2008.
"The reality is that although vehicle thefts are down, criminals are using more and more sophisticated tricks to get around improved vehicle security," said Stuart Chapman, Tracker's Police Relationships Manager.
