Caravan owners to share park with rare squirrels

Visitors to a caravan park in the Lake District could find themselves sharing their site with a host of furry friends as the site battles to establish itself as home to a population of red squirrels.

Staff at Skelwith Fold caravan park in Ambleside have worked for two years to help the creatures, and now eight squirrels have set up habitats at the site.

The UK's red squirrel population has dwindled since the arrival of the non-native greys, meaning caravanners visiting the site will be able to experience a rare glimpse of the red variety in natural surroundings.

In preparation, workers had to rid the site of the grey squirrels through a process of humane culling, and park owner Henry Wild revealed that it had taken "a lot of hard work" from the site's conservation team to help ready the area for the arrival of the red squirrels.

However, he claimed that the "fantastic result" had made it all worthwhile.

"The possible return of the reds is something we've all dreamt of for a long time, and now it's become a reality thanks to the determination of the Skelwith community," he said.

Mobile home owners keen to embrace nature and catch sight of the squirrels will be reminded to take out caravan insurance before making their journey, however.

In one incident, the Daily Star reported that a motorhome in Sheffield had been struck by a Transit van, the driver of which failed to stop at the scene.
