Police end caravan crime spree
There was good news for caravan insurance customers after police charged two men in connection with the organised theft of mobile homes.
Thomas Smith, 27, and 28-year-old Anthony George both pleaded guilty to conspiracy to steal after appearing at Preston Crown Court yesterday.
The duo were involved in an organised operation that saw the theft of a series of high-value caravans across Lancashire, the north west and Europe.
They were arrested in August last year after police launched an investigation into the high number of mobile homes being stolen, and will now be sentenced in the New Year.
Working in partnership with regulators from the caravan insurance industry, officers from Lancashire Constabulary also successfully recovered items of stolen property in various parts of the UK.
A spokesperson for the Stolen Vehicle Squad said caravan theft was a crime that brought misery to its victims and claimed that the arrests would help prevent further incidents.
"This conviction coincides with a marked reduction in caravan theft across Lancashire which was targeted in 2007," he said.
Earlier this month, stolen vehicle recovery expert Tracker revealed that it had helped recover £100,000 worth of stolen property while working in conjunction with Durham Police, including five caravans.
