Brits look to caravanning to beat credit crunch

An increasing number of British holidaymakers are set to turn to caravanning in a bid to beat the credit crunch, according to a report.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has seen a significant increase in UK residents preparing to ditch flights abroad in favour of the British outdoors.

Frances Tuke, a spokesperson for the association, said that caravanning and camping had both been "very popular" in the last year.

More people were also turning to "posh camping", she claimed, which included those holidaying in static caravans and other semi-permanent structures.

"I know that The Caravan Club has really seen a marked increase in business last year. That's been both in Europe and the UK," she stated.

A survey conducted by Opinium Research found that 77 per cent of holidaymakers counted price as the most significant factor when choosing their holiday destination.

This means more and more people could be set to take out caravan insurance and hit roads across the UK and Europe as their ability to pay out for flights abroad is hampered by the effects of the credit crunch.

However, those setting up their satellite navigation systems in search of isolated campsites and caravan parks were warned last week not to use the devices as a substitute for common sense and general road awareness.
