Caravan owners urged to protect against theft

New buyers and current owners of mobile homes are being warned to take make sure they are doing all they can to protect against the threat of theft during the economic downturn.

The onset of the credit crunch has created a number of unwanted effects for residents and holidaymakers across the UK, with the latest being a potential increase in crime.

According to the Daily Telegraph, the Home Office is concerned that the number of incidents will rise, meaning it is even more important for caravanners to take precautions.

As a result, Discover Leisure is keen to remind owners of a number of top tips to help protect their caravans from thieves this winter.

These include fitting an alarm to their vehicles and enabling it every time they leave them, as well as immobilising their motorhomes with the use of good quality wheel clamps and locks.

Keys should be kept safe and out of sight at all times, while valuables should be removed from the caravan so as not to tempt thieves into taking a closer look.

Fitting a tracking device to help trace the vehicle in case it is stolen was also a good idea, while taking out full caravan insurance cover could help soften the blow of such an incident.

This comes after thieves drove off with a caravan in Hull, which had been home to a family whose house fell victim to flooding in the area.
