Dog saves man from caravan blaze

One caravan insurance customer has had a lucky escape after his pet dog saved him from his burning mobile home.

Russell Rigby was living in the vehicle at Chivenor Caravan Park, Chivenor, and says he now has "nothing left" after all his possessions were destroyed by the blaze.

However, he maintains that he was fortunate to escape at all, and says he owes his life to his 14-month-old dog Jake.

Mr Rigby was roused by the animal biting him, which he said had never happened before, allowing him to escape the inferno through the caravan window.

He then raised the alarm, before immediately turning off the gas in order to prevent "the whole park going up".

"I tried to put the fire out with water, but I've never known anything go up so quick, it was awful," Mr Rigby said.

Firefighters later extinguished the blaze but the caravan was left completely destroyed, leaving him thankful that he had escaped in time.

"If it wasn't for Jake I wouldn't be here," he insisted.

This comes after 39-year-old Phillip Wells, who also saw his motorhome gutted by fire after an electrical fault, warned other owners to beware of the dangers.

Speaking to the Bradford Telegraph and Argus, he said batteries should be disconnected when caravans were not in use to prevent similar incidents in future.
