Caravan families 'are not forgotten'

More than 100 caravan insurance customers are to be offered a support package to help maintain the safety of their vehicles.

Following last year's flooding across parts of England, 17,000 families were forced to leave their homes due to the floodwaters.

Around 1,000 are still living out of their houses, with over ten per cent now facing the prospect of spending the festive season living in caravans.

Responding to the problem, floods recovery minister John Healey said: "I am especially concerned about families facing a second Christmas in caravans."

Mr Healey is now linking up with council leaders in the worst-hit areas in order to provide support.

The package will involve fresh caravan safety checks, as well as advice on dealing with rogue builders and as much as £200 per family to help with energy costs.

With over 16,000 families now back home, Mr Healey also delivered a message to those still living in temporary accommodation, assuring them that they had not been forgotten.

Last week, it emerged that one family who had fallen victim to the flooding had been cruelly targeted by thieves in Hull.

The crooks made off with a caravan that had been temporary home to Janet Tasker and her family for the last five months.
