UK breaks surge in popularity

More and more people are taking out caravan insurance as they prepare to hit locations across the UK, research suggests.

The increasing effects of the credit crunch on consumers are limiting their ability to afford flights overseas, but many are reluctant to let finances cancel their holiday entirely.

As a result, UK tourists are increasingly looking to stay closer to home as they seek to discover all that the region has to offer.

Indeed, research by analysts Mintel shows an eight per cent rise in the number of people visiting holiday centres in Britain over the last five years, an increase of half a million.

Commenting on the rising popularity, a spokesperson for Butlins said the "fantastic value for money" of UK sites was a significant factor for many.

The strength of the euro against the pound had also had an effect, meaning trips abroad have become a lot more expensive in recent months.

"People are discovering the joy of holidaying in the UK, and I think next year they are going to be even more so," she predicted.

A survey of 2,000 people by Opinium Research for travelsupermarket.com revealed that 77 per cent of people considered price to be the overriding factor in their choice of holiday destination.
