ABD: Minimise congestion to cut costs

Caravan insurance customers looking to help cut down on the cost of their UK breaks have been given a series of fuel-saving tips.

With many Brits turning to mobile homes as a cheaper form of holidaying, it seems cost-cutting is one of the main concerns for many consumers during the current economic climate.

But while caravanning may be a less expensive alternative to long-haul flights abroad, many drivers on the roads are currently failing in their quest to drive more efficiently, an expert has suggested.

Nigel Humphries, spokesman for the Association of British Drivers (ABD), said that those looking to save on fuel during their trips should "drive to reduce congestion" wherever possible.

Criticising the "selfish nature" of some current advice, he insisted that "crawl everywhere" eco advice was actually leading to an increase in fuel consumption.

Rather than obstructing other traffic by driving below the speed limits and being slow to restart their engines after turning them off at red lights, Mr Humphries claimed that drivers should "facilitate smooth flow of traffic and minimise congestion at every opportunity". "This is the true way to minimise overall fuel usage," he declared.

Driving to cut congestion would help cut journey times and save fuel for motorists and travellers across the UK, he added.

Motorists were advised by GEM Motoring Assist recently that ensuring their tyres are property inflated would also help to improve fuel economy when driving.
