Hull caravan firm handed top award

UK mobile home enthusiasts looking to invest in a new model may consider taking a trip to a caravan company in east Hull.

Coachman, based in Sutton Fields, has been handed the Hull Daily Mail's Ernst and Young-sponsored Business of the Year Award 2008.

As the credit crunch continues to affect consumers and businesses across the UK, the firm has defied the downturn to record a 20 per cent increase in sales, according to the Hull Daily Mail.

Coachman has recently rolled out five new models, and picked up a string of industry awards as well as a top-class review in Which Caravan magazine.

Managing director Jim Hibbs suggested that the company's smaller size may have been a factor in its ability to hold off the effects of the economic crisis.

"When the market is good it always favours market leaders, but when it gets difficult, it is to their detriment," he explained.

The firm's achievements were also down to the overriding passion for caravans shared by its employees, Mr Hibbs added.

"In a word, it's just passion. We're always aiming to improve our products," he declared.

The number of people taking out caravan insurance on their new vehicles is expected to increase this year as more people look to discover "the joy of holidaying in the UK", according to British holiday site Butlins.
