Britons holiday at home
More families have been opting for self-catering breaks in the UK during the credit crunch, according to experts.
There has been an increase in bookings for caravan holidays as well as breaks in holiday parks, boats and country lodges on home soil, reported the Daily Mail.
The news could lead to a rise in people taking out caravan insurance to financially protect against fires or accidents.
Self-catering holiday operator Hoseasons had seen a 15 per cent rise in bookings next year among the more budget-conscious.
"We don't think people will stop going on holiday, but they are being more careful about the kind of holiday they choose," a spokesperson said.
Caravans are an ideal choice for a budget break, allowing tourists to save money by cooking-in while travelling to their holiday hot spot.
Holidaymakers can also reserve spots in static caravans if they do not have mobile accommodation or do not want to hire a temporary home, with the Carla Gran caravan park a popular spot for tourists wanting to visit Blackpool.
Great Yarmouth and Scarborough had seen a ten per cent increase in reservations for 2009, Naomi Woodstock of holiday park company Haven said.
Other popular holidays for people with a mobile home in the UK include Scotland.
Famous Scottish scenery like the munros and lochs are notoriously difficult to get to by public transport and have few guesthouses or hotels nearby with many farm stays in smaller towns fully booked.
