Fire destroys caravan

The perils of leaving a caravan unattended were highlighted in Essex this weekend when a man's home burned down.

According to the Essex Chronicle, the occupant had gone away for the weekend when the caravan set on fire at Sadlers Farm.

Fire fighters struggled to put out the static home that was already well ablaze when they arrived on Saturday at 13:45 local time.

Two other crews from Ingatestone and Ongar were called as back up for the Brentwood emergency service bunch due to a shortage of water.

It took just over half an hour to extinguish the blaze.

Commander of Brentwood Fire Station Andy White confirmed the caravan was home to a man on his own.

"This was a large, static caravan. There was one single male living in the mobile home but he had been away for the weekend," he said.

According to Westminster department, Communities and Local Government, fires in caravans kill nine people and injure about 100 people in the UK each year.

It advises all owners to fit mobile homes with smoke alarms, not to leave cooking unattended and to turn all electricity off at night.

A guide on how to reduce the risk of fires in mobile homes is available at the Communities and Local Government website.
