The number of people taking out caravan insurance on new vehicles could be set to rise as motorhome trips become increasingly popular.

According to the Birmingham Mail, there could never be a better time to buy a mobile home as the chancellor's VAT cut has led to more competitive prices.

Meanwhile, manufacturers are taking it upon themselves to offer new "downturn-defying models" for 2009, the newspaper reports.

This means that UK holidaymakers looking for a cheaper way to get away this summer can make savings of up to £1,000 on certain models.

A spokesman for the Motorhome Information Service confirmed his belief that "there is no better way of getting great value leisure" this summer than investing in a new caravan.

"Besides the crunch-busting new models, there's plenty of interest in second hand vehicles, which are selling well," he said.

He added that bookings for caravan parks are expected to continue rising next year as more people choose the "stay at home option" to obtain the "best value they can get for their leisure pound".

This comes after the Daily Mail reported this week that the number of families opting to holiday in Britain in 2009 could rise by more than one million as the pound continues to fall against the euro.
