Brits seeking holidays closer to home
The economic downturn may be bad news for many across Britain, but it could provide a major boost to the UK tourist industry.
According to VisitBritain, the squeeze on family finances means that a number of Brits could sacrifice short breaks abroad in favour of staying closer to home.
Unfavourable exchange rates are also a "key aspect", said Elliot Frisby, press and public relations manager for the organisation, forcing those looking to holiday on a budget to remain in the UK.
The trend could lead to an increase in the number of people taking out caravan insurance before heading off to hotspots such as the Lake District and the southern Cotswolds.
However, there are a number of other locations across the UK that may prove to be of interest to tourists, Mr Frisby suggests.
"Many more of us are discovering city break destinations like Liverpool [and] Newcastle, and London has always been popular," he stated.
Caravanning holidays at home could also help protect Brits against some of the major concerns involved in holidaying overseas.
According to greenbee.com, a survey revealed that more than a third of UK holidaymakers worry about the potential collapse of their travel operator, while 17 per cent expressed their concern about getting poor exchange rates.
