Recession 'could boost UK tourist industry'
The current recession may be bad news for businesses and consumers across the UK, but it has given the British tourist industry a huge boost.
With the credit crunch continuing to keep a tight grip on the finances of most families, many are unable to afford flights or package holidays abroad.
Instead, they are seeking to stay closer to home, with more tourists potentially looking to take out caravan insurance ahead of a UK motorhome break.
As a result, the current recession could be "the perfect storm" for British tourism in 2009, a spokesperson for VisitBritain has claimed.
He said that, with the unfavourable exchange rate also hindering overseas travel plans for Brits, the UK tourist industry could stand to benefit.
"Britons may look at those eurozone destinations and say: 'Actually, it's more expensive for me to holiday there so I'll consider holidaying at home'," he explained.
The region could also be boosted by foreign visitors in the coming year, the spokesman suggested, with more Europeans and Americans looking to make their money go further as a result of the weakening pound.
Earlier this week, VisitBritain suggested that the credit crunch could encourage Brits to take short breaks closer to home, with places like the Lake District and the Cotswolds likely to prove popular.
