UK caravan trips surge in popularity

The surge in popularity of British camping and caravanning holidays has been named among the top ten travel and tourism events of 2008 by one report.

With the global financial crisis really taking hold on the UK economy over the course of the year, family finances up and down the region have been stretched.

However, despite cutting back on treats such as luxury shopping items and eating out, consumers have been unwilling to sacrifice their annual holidays - leading many to turn to cut-price caravanning trips in the UK, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Unable to afford the cost of flights and package holidays abroad, many have resorted to taking out caravan insurance on new or used models and hitting the open road in search of some of Britain's top tourist locations.

Indeed, the boom has been so noticeable that the return of camping ranks alongside events such as the QE2's final voyage as one of the top ten incidents of this year.

The report claims that there has also been a re-emergence of "vintage camper vans", as Britons chose to stay closer to home for their holidays and make the most of an outdoor holiday in the UK.

This follows suggestions by a spokesperson for VisitBritain that the current recession could be "the perfect storm" for UK tourism, with more families holidaying in places such as the Lake District and the Cotswolds.
