Caravan popularity 'set to continue'

The number of people taking out caravan insurance on newly-bought mobile homes in 2007 increased by almost ten per cent on the previous year.

Louise Wood, director of communications for the National Caravan Council, revealed that more than 30,000 caravans were sold over the course of the 12 months. She hailed this as "a very good year" for the mobile home industry, although she conceded that people were being "more cautious" in recent times.

Despite the effects of the current economic crisis, however, caravan holidays continue to remain popular among UK tourists.

Ms Wood claimed that many park groups had reported increased bookings in 2009, with the pressure on finances and the weakening value of the pound combining to encourage more British holidaymakers to stay closer to home.

"A lot of people say that where they might have travelled further afield in their caravans next year is going to be the year that they stay in the UK," she stated.

This trend is expected to continue into the near future, with the industry hoping for "a lovely hot, sunny summer" to encourage more people to holiday in Britain.

The surge in popularity of UK camping and caravanning holidays recently was recently named as one of the top ten travel and tourism events of 2008 in a report by the Daily Telegraph.
