Motorists urged to think about safety
People planning to take to the roads in 2009 have been urged to ensure they know how to drive safely.
The advice came from Trevor Wedge, director of safer driving for the Driving Standards Agency (DSA), who warned that there are still too many road deaths in the UK, despite improvements in vehicle safety.
Among his recommendations are basic techniques, such as keeping a safe distance behind the vehicle in front, travelling at a speed appropriate to the conditions and avoiding heavy braking where possible.
Caravan insurance policyholders who intend to head on to the roads when they take their holiday have also been advised to indulge in some forward thinking.
Long journeys should be planned in advance, according to the DSA, to ensure sufficient time is allowed and drivers know where they will be able to stop in order to take a break.
Motorists also need to make certain their vehicle is roadworthy before setting out, particularly during cold winter weather when the condition of tyres and lights could prove crucial.
One part of the UK where the safety message appears to be getting through is Northern Ireland, where road fatalities reached a record low last year, according to figures compiled by the Department of the Environment.
