Caravan bookings up 40%
This could be the year of the caravan in the UK, an industry body has claimed.
The suggestion was made by The Caravan Club after it experienced a surge in sales last month.
It seems that British caravanners, perhaps worried about the economic downturn and the weak pound, are choosing to stay in the UK for their holidays this year.
Advanced bookings for the 2009 season have dwarfed the figures for 2008 - up by 40 per cent - and membership of The Caravan Club grew by more than 1,300 during December.
The body's director of marketing Nick Lomas expects more people to follow the trend and book in at one of the 3,000 locations open to caravan insurance policyholders during the holiday season.
"We confidently predict that 2009 will be the year that welcomes the return of the great British holiday, something Caravan Club members have enjoyed for over a Century," said Mr Lomas.
Caravan owners were recently advised to check their vehicles' tyres before they set off on their way to their holiday berth.
The RAC Foundation said older caravans are particularly vulnerable to tyre fatigue.
All tyres have a natural lifespan, but those used on most cars are usually replaced before being affected by age. However, tyres on low-mileage vehicles are rarely changed, according to the RAC Foundation, which means they can become unsafe without owners realising it.
