White caravans hinder planning application

The fact that most caravans are white is causing problems for the owners of a York holiday park.

Rob and Jenny Lewis are hoping to gain permission to add 24 more caravan pitches to the Ashfield Holiday Cottages and Touring Caravan Park in Dunnington, reports the Press.

However, local council officers have not looked favourably on their application, producing a negative report about the scheme for the planning committee to consider.

The report claimed the development would encroach on an area that is currently open countryside, something that would be made worse because the white caravans would standout against the green backdrop.

Mr Lewis told the newspaper he disagreed with the findings and insisted the proposed site extension would not have any impact on the surrounding green belt.

His wife added: "The thing that is a bit upsetting is that they are always trying to push tourism in York, so why don't they help small businesses like us?"

Caravan insurance policyholders keen to visit York already have the choice of several sites to choose from on the outskirts of the historic city.

The Caravan Club also lists a wide range of holiday parks in the surrounding North Yorkshire area that caravanners can use.
