Police officer announces caravan retirement plans

A Scottish police officer has told a local newspaper of his plans to retire from the force and tour Europe in his new motor home.

Kenny Owen could be eagerly hunting around for caravan insurance over the next few weeks before he announces his decision to step down as Portobello's Community Beat Officer.

According to the Edinburgh Evening News, the 52-year-old is also a keen bagpipe player and plans to "busk his way" around the continent in his new vehicle.

Having patrolled the city's streets for 30 years, Mr Owen plans to head off in his caravan this spring, with the Normandy beaches and French battlefields at the top of his list of desired locations.

"It is the right time to take some time out to go travelling and I thought I may as well take the pipes with me," he told the newspaper.

"I've used the term busking and the way the pound is to the euro I might have to resort to that for income," he added.

Mr Owen plans to travel for a year, although he said this would depend on how he got on initially.

He was also reminded of the importance of taking out caravan insurance on his vehicle after a caravan at Wybunbury was gutted by a blaze yesterday, requiring two fire engines to eventually douse the flames, the Crewe Chronicle reports.
