'Reading caravan' gets mixed reception

A miniature caravan designed to double up as a reading den for children has been branded a waste of money by councillors.

The £56,000 vehicle will be situated at the refurbished Battle Library and features a host of picture and story books to encourage children to take up reading, the Reading Evening Post reports.

It will be designed as a replica of the historic Reading caravan, so-called because it was first made in the town.

However, councillors have dismissed the plans as a waste of money, claiming that there are a number of other ways to encourage children to read.

"When we were growing up we were encouraged to read without the addition of a caravan," said Councillor Jeanette Skeats.

Despite this, caravan insurance customers might be interested to hear of the idea, which will also see a story-telling tree placed alongside the vehicle.

Indeed, Reading borough's lead councillor for culture and sport welcomed the proposals, claiming that the caravan could help children "discover the joy of reading".

"I think the caravan will be a lovely area for children to read and I think it will encourage youngsters to come back," he told the newspaper.

Caravans were recently used by revellers to see in the New Year, with a total of 38 mobile homes rolling up at a rally run by the Avon Caravan Club, according to the Bristol Evening Post.
