'More Brits holidaying at home'
An increasing number of Brits are being put off expensive flights abroad in favour of buying a caravan, an industry expert has claimed
Eddy McKenzie-Blyth, director of Grantham Caravans, said that he expects fewer people to head overseas on their holidays over the next 12 months.
He revealed that a number of caravan insurance customers have been prompted to buy themselves a mobile home after being deterred from taking a trip abroad.
The credit crunch has meant that UK families may have been forced to reconsider their holiday options in recent months, with the fall of the pound against the euro also proving a significant influence.
"I think we are going to get people staying in the country more. People still want holidays. They can use their caravans more, and get caravans for that purpose," Mr McKenzie-Blyth said.
He also expressed his belief that the demographic of the typical caravan user was beginning to change, with "a younger family man" now being attracted into the industry.
This could be attributed to the "more dynamic image" of the caravan now than in the past, he added.
According to research by Visit London and VisitBritain, 90 per cent of the UK population are cutting down on spending in order to save for a holiday next year.
