Caravan gutted by farm blaze

A farmer in north Yorkshire can count himself lucky to have escaped with little more than a hefty claim on his caravan insurance policy after a major blaze.

The blaze destroyed a mobile home on the farm, as well as a tractor, some hand tools and 1,300 bales of straw.

Farm manager Gavin Stainthorpe was also taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation after being knocked down by stampeding cows looking to escape the fire, the Whitby Gazette reports.

Fire investigators believe the blaze may have been caused by an electrical fault which set fire to a barn, before the flames spread quickly across the farm.

Mr Stainthorpe told the newspaper he had tried to deal with the situation himself by leading the livestock to safety, but had been caught out by the speed with which the fire spread.

"It was blowing that quickly into the other buildings you could not see one yard in front of you," he relayed.

"The cows were frightened, came stampeding out and knocked me down."

This is Kent reports that an empty caravan in Eastchurch was also gutted by fire at the weekend, with firefighters battling for an hour to bring the flames under control.
