Duo jailed over caravan thefts
Caravan owners across the UK may breathe a sigh of relief after police brought an end to an organised caravan crime circle.
Officers arrested two men after an investigation into the theft of several high-value mobile homes across Lancashire, north-west England and Europe.
The culprits were sentenced at Preston Crown Court and have both been jailed for their part in the crimes.
Police launched the investigation in the summer of 2007 after it emerged that Lancashire featured as the main target for the thieves, who used 4x4 vehicles to tow the stolen caravans away.
A spokesperson for the Stolen Vehicle Squad said officers were pleased to bring an end to the incidents, which had caused "untold misery" for some caravan insurance holders.
"I would like today's sentences to serve as a warning to anybody who is involved in this type of criminality: we will pursue you and we will bring you to justice," he declared.
A number of victims were also reunited with their property during the operation after police managed to recover stolen items from various parts of the UK.
Owners looking to reduce the risk of falling victim to thieves and avoid a claim on their caravan insurance can take a number of security precautions.
These include fitting their caravans with wheel clamps and ensuring that they keep the keys to their vehicle out of sight at all times.
