British holidays 'set for popularity boost'
Caravanning holidays could become more and more popular as the credit crisis continues to bite into the finances of British tourists, it has been claimed.
The financial downturn has caused many people in the UK to cut back on outgoings, but many remain determined not to sacrifice their annual holidays because of the crunch.
An increasing number of people are unlikely to venture abroad this year, however, with the fall of the pound against the euro making most overseas holidays more expensive.
This could see an increase in the number people taking out caravan insurance before setting off to discover the delights of various British attractions.
Indeed, Aldi Travel's Sarah Butler suggested that people are now more likely to "get out and discover local markets".
"Increasingly, people will want to holiday in the UK and people will get back to discovering British holidays whether that is down in Devon or two-night city breaks," she claimed.
The downturn would also see holidaymakers looking to work out "down to the last penny" how much they will be spending during their time away, Ms Butler added.
According to research by Visit London and VisitBritain, Brits are now spending less on food costs and cutting back on luxuries in order to save for a holiday this year.
