Halifax counts the cost of a car

Halifax Car Insurance has expressed surprise that more people are not taking up car sharing to get to the office.

As well as enjoying the company if you choose wisely, the bank has estimated car-sharers in the UK can save more than £500 in annual driving costs.

This is because the average person driving to work racks up £1,017 in fuel and other costs, according to Halifax's survey of the nation's drivers.

Moreover, car-sharing can even make for cheaper car insurance, as fewer cars on the roads means less risk of an accident.

This in turn decreases your chances of incurring a penalty to your no claims discount, the best way to be sure of consistently cheap car insurance premiums.

Mike Pickard, head of risk and underwriting, said: "More and more people are driving to work every day and with an increasing number of vehicles on the roads causing jams, as well as increasing petrol and parking costs, it can be a stressful journey.

"Passengers in the car not only improve your environmental credentials, they can also act as an extra pair of eyes for you, especially in the morning rush hour when traffic is at its heaviest."

Young people are the most likely to pool their resources with colleagues, 30 out of every 100 commuters in the 18-to-24 age bracket reporting sharing the daily drive to work.
