Holidaymakers looking to cut costs
An increasing number of Britons are planning to cut their holiday budget this year, according to a new study.
Research commissioned by the Confederation of Passenger Transport UK found that 50 per cent of people intend to spend £500 or less on their main break in 2009.
Only 31 per cent of people had that spending cap in 2008, but some of the survey's findings suggest the demand for low-budget options could be good news for the UK's tourism industry.
Almost half of those quizzed said cost is the main factor in choosing a holiday, with a similar number citing the same reason as the most important issue when selecting a mode of transport to reach their destination.
Such cost-conscious holidaymakers are likely to find they can only afford a break in the UK, although the cost of rooms in a good hotel would still soon eat up a £500 budget.
Cheaper options which combine travel with accommodation, such as caravanning and camping, could be the main beneficiaries of this drive to save money.
Figures released by The Caravan Club suggest that 2009 could be a bumper year for the UK's caravan sites, as advanced bookings for the year are 40 per cent higher than they were for 2008.
Caravan insurance customers have also been making a long-term commitment to caravanning, with more than 50,000 families joining the club last year.
