Motorists reminded to check fuel levels
Holidaymakers intending to hit the open roads en route to their favourite UK caravan site are being urged to make sure they do not get caught short of fuel.
According to Highways Agency figures, more than 1,700 motorway drivers in the south-west of England saw their journeys come to a premature end after running out of fuel.
The organisation is keen to remind motorists of the importance of planning ahead and remembering to top up, with many people injured in accidents while on motorway hard shoulders each year.
"We want to make drivers aware of the dangers and also encourage them to check their fuel levels before they set out," said Andrew Page-Dove, network operations manager at the Highways Agency.
The organisation has arranged for signs to be located at certain points across the motorway network to remind motorists to check their fuel levels.
It is hoped this will help put an end to the "alarming" number of drivers left stranded after allowing their vehicles to run dry, Mr Page-Dove added.
Caravan insurance holders and motorists in the UK are often reminded of the need to plan their journeys before setting out, with the Highways Agency running a number of roadshows to emphasise the matter in recent weeks.
