Salesman cons caravan owners out of £165k

The owner of a crooked Grimsby caravan sales firm has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for selling motorhomes belonging to other people and pocketing the cash.

According to the Grimsby Telegraph, Stephen Price, 53, conned dozens of victims by selling their caravans in secret and keeping the £165,000 in proceeds.

Local butcher Pete Jerrard, 47, was among those conned. He sold his caravan through Mr Price and was told a buyer had been found, but that they could not pay him the £15,995 Mr Price had put on the motorhome for a number of months.

Mr Jerrard commented that he was told his caravan was "pretty much sold" and so he informed his caravan insurance provider. But he later found that he could not get in touch with the conman and went on to receive a letter saying that Mr Price was going bankrupt.

"I have since found out that he sold my caravan for £10,000 - well before he told me he had sold it," the butcher commented.

It was found that Mr Price had been selling caravans for less than the owners were told, or that he had kept any surplus cash for himself. Motorhomes on the site had also gone missing and those that were not sold were not returned to their owners in some cases.

At a recent court case held at Grimsby crown court, it emerged that Mr Price had been suffering from mental problems and depression at the time of the incidents.

Last year, 27-year-old Jason McDonagh was sent to prison for 20 months for the re-sale of stolen caravans to unwitting buyers, the Caravan Club reported.
