Caravan owners urged to consider insurance

With a steep rise forecast in the number of Britons choosing to take caravanning holidays in the UK, holidaymakers are being urged to consider the need for insurance on such trips.

Sainsbury's Finance cites reports as having highlighted up to a 40 per cent increase in the number of those booking caravan holidays compared with last year's totals.

However, the firm urges holidaymakers to consider that mishaps not only happen when taking a vacation abroad.

For this reason, those planning a vacation in their motorhome this year may want to ensure their caravan cover is up-to-date.

Sam Marrs, travel insurance manager at Sainsbury's Finance, advises Britons not to neglect their insurance needs.

"Many people...rely on their home insurance thinking their belongings will be covered if lost outside the home whilst on holiday but it's worth remembering there is probably a higher excess to pay and also an impact on your no-claims discount."

According to the Caravan Club, taking motorhome holidays accounts for 19 per cent of the UK's getaway statistics.

Earlier this month, Nick Lomas, director of marketing for The Caravan Club, commented: "We confidently predict that 2009 will be the year that welcomes the return of the great British holiday, something Caravan Club members have enjoyed for over a century."
