Misery as motorhome site expansion is shelved
Despite the demand for a greater number of caravan pitches in York, plans to increase one site's capacity have been shelved after meeting with opposition from the council.
The city of York council rejected plans put forward by caravan site owner Andrew Wilson to double the number of pitches available at his Stockton Lane park, the York Press reports.
Currently, the site can house 20 motorhomes at any one time, but rising demand from caravanners led Mr Wilson to request the expansion.
"There was definite demand for it. I turned away thousands of people last year. It was mainly on bank holidays and weekends, but even during the week it gets full," Mr Wilson told the paper.
He went on to say that the expansion would have brought more jobs and tourism to the area had it gone ahead.
However, Mr Wilson has said that he will continue to try and gain permission for the extra pitches, saying it took him three attempts to get the go-ahead for the initial 20 pitches he currently has.
Meanwhile, caravan insurance policyholders in Yorkshire may be interested to read that local motorhome site Cawood Park has recently changed ownership and is now the property of firm Barleymow.
