Police operation targets caravan thieves

A caravan crime crackdown has been launched in Sussex as police prepare for the coming summer months.

Operation Defender aims to check caravans being towed away in what appear to be suspicious circumstances, with officers asking for public cooperation.

Superintendent Paul Morrison, head of road policing, said: "Caravan theft is on the increase and has been identified as a problem pan Sussex. With this in mind Operation Defender, managed by the road policing department, has been instigated and will be running forcewide."

He added that officers take the problem seriously and Operation Defender is a long-term initiative aimed at to reducing the number of caravans being stolen in Sussex.

In order to avoid having to make a caravan insurance claim, the public can follow a number of steps issued by the constabulary.

These include ensuring that motorhomes are immobilised at all times, even during short stops. The vehicle's serial number should also be marked in several places, such as on the bottom of drawers and underneath cushions, in permanent marker or ultraviolet pen.

Owners are also urged not to keep any documents in their caravan and remove any property when the vehicle is not in use.

Last year, the AA revealed that 4,000 caravans are stolen in the UK every year.
