More van drivers support smoking ban

Approximately 60 per cent of car and van drivers would support a ban on smoking in vehicles, according to a recent survey.

Car magazine Auto Trader polled some 500 people and found that even among smokers, 20 per cent thought drivers should not smoke on the roads.

On the other hand, around half of drivers thought they could pose more of a danger if denied the right to smoke - the craving serving as a distraction.

Van, lorry and tractor drivers in Scotland are all to be banned from smoking at the wheel later this month, in a move that will also have implications for cheap van insurance.

As well as being fined if they choose to ignore the ban, drivers could also face problems when making a claim for damages to their vehicle after an accident.

Cheap van insurance protects against damages and medical costs sustained in an accident as well as theft - providing the keys are not left in the van when stolen.

Smokers' lobby group Forest disagreed that smoking was any more of a distraction than playing music or talking into a hands-free phone.

However, the possible danger was also brought home in a tragic accident this weekend.

Two men died in West Bromwich when a fire destroyed their van as they sat in a car park.

It is believed that a spark from a lit cigarette ignited fumes from leaked petrol.
