Beware pothole damage to caravans

Motorists hoping to get away for a break in their motorhome want to take extra care not to incur a caravan insurance claim as reports of pothole damage to vehicles are on the increase.

According to Warranty Direct, claims for damage to suspension and axles have risen by 13 per cent this winter, year on year.

The firm is now warning that these incidents are likely to increase in light of February's freezing start, with more potholes likely to have been created through the 'freeze and thaw' process, whereby water freezes into cracks in the road and expands.

Managing director of Warranty Direct Duncan McClure Fisher warned that the problem will only get worse.

"With a £1 billion shortfall in road maintenance budgets across the country, local councils will have their work cut out repairing pothole damaged roads", he said.

Meanwhile, the Comet has published that calls reporting potholes have increased in the Stevenage area, with 33 calls made during a three-day period, compared with five calls in the same period in 2008.

Executive member for highways, transport and rural affairs at Hertfordshire county council Stuart Pile told the paper that the freezing weather conditions were the council's "worst nightmare".
