South-west caravan owners 'are big spenders'
Caravan insurance policyholders in the south-west of England may be the biggest spenders when it comes to their British holiday.
Figures released by the Caravan Club have shown that its members in the region spend an average of £39 annually on their motorhome vacation. This compares with a much-reduced figure of £3.60 in north-west England.
Members based in the centre of the country are the second-highest spenders, shelling out £26 on average, while caravanners in London are second from the bottom, willing to dish out £4.50 per year.
According to the Caravan Club, its members contributed £183 million to rural economies during 2008 when embarking on their activities and eating out while on vacation.
Nick Lomas, Director of Marketing for the Caravan Club, has forecast that 2009 will be the year of the British holiday.
"At a time of considerable economic uncertainty, tourism regions across the UK will continue to benefit from stay at home Britons and with thousands of campsites and destinations to choose from, there is no better time to plan and book holiday breaks in the UK," he said.
Recently, spokesperson for the National Caravan Council Louise Wood said that choosing to holiday within the UK rather than elsewhere is becoming more popular among Britons.
