Arson attacks concern residents

A number of caravan insurance policyholders at a seaside town in Chichester may have had to claim on their cover following a spate of arson attacks.

Residents at Bunn Leisure's caravan sites in Selsey have expressed concern over the recent crime spree, in which several caravans were targeted in the past couple of months, the Mid Sussex Times reports.

The most recent incident saw a motorhome set ablaze at the Green Lawns site, with the adjacent motorhome also damaged by heat radiating from the lit vehicle. Another two attacks were reported towards the end of January.

"This is a very sad reflection on society today," commented Selsey councillor John Connor.

"The caravans aren't occupied at this time of year. If it is arson I imagine Bunn Leisure is extremely concerned about it and taking the appropriate steps with the police."

According to figures from the Arson Prevention Bureau, 2,213 fires are started deliberately each week in the UK, at a cost of £53.8 million, while some 1,402 vehicles are destroyed or damaged through arson weekly.

In addition, incidents of arson in vehicles has risen by 56 per cent between 1992 and 2003, the organisation claims.
