Petition suggests caravan tax
A petition has been made to parliament for a new annual road tax to be levied on caravans.
Despite motorhomers already having to pay for costs such as fuel and caravan insurance, it has been suggested that these motorists should now fork out extra for tax as a result of congestion and reducing the fuel efficiency of vehicles, potentially leading to an increase in pollution.
Richard Smith, who has drawn up the petition, has so far only attracted a handful of supporters, with 16 people putting their signatures to the campaign.
Additionally, Mr Smith's petition suggests that caravanners are making other road users stressed out by clogging up the roads.
"This causes stress on other drivers who are stuck behind these caravans when they are trying to go about their daily affairs, stress-related illness is putting a strain on the NHS," his petition reads.
Caravans are currently not liable for road tax in the form of vehicles excise duty, but incur the same tax levy as cars if they weigh less than 3,500 kilograms. Those weighing more than 3,500 kg incur tax at a rate of private heavy goods vehicles.
