Caravan industry problems to be outlined

A group of business and political representatives plan to outline the plight of East Yorkshire's caravan industry in a meeting with business secretary Lord Mandelson.

The Hull Daily Mail reports that a delegation of three local MPs, business heads and union representatives will meet with Mr Mandelson in March with the hope of coming up with solutions to the region's problematic industry.

Caravan insurance policyholders in Yorkshire may remember that west Hull caravan manufacturer Atlas Holiday Homes went into administration in December, prompting a letter by local and city MPs calling for the meeting with the business secretary.

Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson commented: "This industry is critical to the region's economy and I am concerned if no action is taken, its collapse will have the same impact as that of the car industry in the Midlands."

Thousands of workers in the region are thought to have been adversely affected by the struggling industry, the publication suggests.

Earlier this month, small firms across Yorkshire were urged to sign up to the government's Supply2gov website, which gives details of government contracts for businesses wishing to supply to the public sector.
