Brits flock to Cumbria holiday parks
Caravan insurance policyholders could be amongst those flocking to the Solway coast as the region's holiday parks have reported an increase in bookings.
The Cumberland News reports that bookings made by those wishing to stay at Stanwix Holiday Park and Hilton Caravan Park have surpassed previous records.
Bookings at Silloth holiday parks are up by more than a fifth, according to the publication.
Eric Stanwix, who owns Stanwix Holiday Park, has attributed the rise in bookings to the economic situation, with the pound being weak against the euro.
"There's been a fairly dramatic upturn this year. Last year we had a good year, but this one I think will be even better," he commented.
He went on to say that while he believes Britons are not short of money, he thinks they are spending more wisely, as the cost of holidaying abroad "has gone through the roof".
Meanwhile, mayor of Silloth Graham Wilkinson welcomed the news, saying that he hoped those staying at caravan sites in the area would boost local tourism by using the facilities in the town.
The Caravan Club recently reported that bookings for the year were up 40 per cent compared with 2008 figures.
