Mother and daughter lose motorhome in blaze
A woman from Devon has expressed her sadness at the loss of her beloved motorhome, in an incident that could prompt drivers to invest in caravan insurance for their motorhome.
Cathy Meredith and her 16-year-old daughter Sarah had driven a short distance from their home in Totnes when their caravan suddenly set ablaze.
Both managed to escape unscathed, as did their dog, Eric, but the fire caused wide-ranging damage.
The Herald Express reports that flames leapt so high that telephone wires overhead came down and two properties lost their telephone services.
Ms Meredith commented that the fire spread quickly, becoming "an inferno in no time".
"For us it is the end of an era because we have had the motor home for 20 years," said Ms Meredith, whose daughter suffers from cystic fibrosis.
"We used to park it on the seafront if we were on holiday and people would come and sign up for organ donations. It was a huge travelling billboard."
The van was completely gutted in the fire, which is thought to have started from an electrical fault.
Recently, arsonists in Hartlepool set fire to a couple's caravan, but the quick-thinking couple managed to move gas cylinders from the vehicle before it exploded.
