Pensioner plagued by van vandals

A pensioner from Lepton has had to fork out over £1,000 in two years to repair his Robin Reliant van after being repeatedly targeted by local vandals.

George Wilkinson, 71, said that he couldn't easily claim the cost on his van insurance as it was only third party, fire and theft van insurance, not comprehensive.

However, his van has been attacked around 12 times in under two years with no arrests yet made.

The latest attack involved the use of a concrete block to smash the van's windscreen, following previous incidents when the tyres were slashed and the van turned over.

The vandalism is believed to be the work of young men returning home after a night out, while the scale of the damage depends on how drunk they are and where they leave their taxi to walk.

Mr Wilkinson often hears the noise, but only gets up in time to see the vandals running away from the scene.

He told the Huddersfield Daily Examiner: "I have Parkinson's disease so I use the car every day to get about. This whole business is making me poorly. I feel like I am under siege.

"I even spent £1,800 having a drive done so there was somewhere safe to park the van."

Cheap third party van insurance is a legal requirement in the UK, but drivers should consider comprehensive van insurance if there are good deals around. Cheaper van insurance can be obtained by investing in extra security and keeping the van in a garage overnight.
