Dogs rescued from motorhome blaze
A man in north Wales risked his life twice by entering a burning caravan to save the owner's pets.
Richard Hughes used a blanket to shield himself from the blaze as he rescued two dogs and three cats from his neighbour's caravan in woodlands at Llandegla.
The 34-year-old from Gwersyllt plunged into the burning caravan after the owner, 67-year-old Florence Williams, escaped the blaze and shouted for help.
"Apparently her candle had fallen off the side-board. She was shouting 'firebrigade'," Mr Hughes told the North Wales Daily Post.
"She had managed to get a dog out, but there were four other dogs trapped in there and three cats," he added.
Despite his heroic efforts, Mr Hughes as unable to rescue two of the dogs, which died in the blaze.
Although it was not clear whether Ms Williams had caravan insurance, such an investment would help ensure that she could recover the cost of the caravan blaze to help her find a new home.
John Berry, fire safety enforcement officer for Wrexham, said the incident demonstrated the dangers of leaving candles unattended in properties.
Earlier this week, a Hartlepool woman summoned up great bravery to drive her burning caravan away from their house.
Dawn Grant hooked up the blazing caravan to her car and drove it away from its position in their drive to prevent their home from catching light.
While caravan insurance cannot cover acts of bravery, it can provide peace of mind and security for those who see their caravans destroyed.
