Met confirms extent of organised crime
The Metropolitan police has confirmed that there are more than 170 criminal gangs operational in London, comprising 24 nationalities.
This is bad news if you're a Londoner looking for cheaper home insurance, as the cost is largely dependent on your postcode and the level of crime in the area.
Gangland crime in the capital accounts for almost three quarters (70 per cent) of the national total, with 24 nationalities involved in crime ranging from drug dealing to murder and kidnapping.
The majority of the gangs are involved in a range of crimes, with 56 per cent dealing in "serious violence" such as murder and kidnapping.
Almost half (47 per cent) of organised crime is carried out by people of the same cultural community, while nine per cent is family-orientated.
Two per cent is so-called "virtual" crime, where those involved never actually meet in person.
Assistant commissioner Tarique Ghaffur, head of the specialist crime directorate, said: "It is not a million pound industry it is a multi-million pound industry," according to Life Style Extra.
"The bottom line is, yes, London is safe. We want to make all Londoners feel safe and give a very clear message to people if you come here and commit the type of crime you may have committed somewhere else we will bring you to justice."
Londoners looking for cheap home insurance should always make sure they are adequately covered for theft, while also taking sensible security precautions.
