'Check caravan tyres before Easter journeys'
Motorists are being urged to have their tyres checked this Easter before hitting the road with their caravans.
Drivers hoping to avoid a caravan insurance claim while towing their vehicle away for the Easter break might want to take note of advice recently given out by tyre dealer network Protyre.
The firm suggests that owners check their caravan and trailer tyres before embarking upon a journey, as the out of season storage conditions may have left its effects. Drivers should check lumps or bulges in their wheels to make sure they have not cracked after being left standing over a long period, the company states.
Tyres tread should also be checked to ensure that the vehicle is roadworthy and meets the national standard of 1.6 mm, while pressure should be inflated to the correct level as set out in the manufacturer's handbook.
"Tyre pressures are equally crucial to the safety, stability and economical running of both the caravan and the towing vehicle," the firm commented.
"Under or over inflated tyres can not only affect the handling, but can at the extreme result in a tyre failure."
Last year, TyreSafe urged motorists to check their caravan tyres for wear and tear before embarking on their summer holidays.
