Exhibition shows caravans as media art
Caravan insurance customers might want to head to London to view an art exhibition that focuses on the caravanning culture of the 1970s and 80s.
Contemporary Indian media artist Ashok Sukumaran is displaying his exhibition entitled The Neighbour at the University of Westminster until 9th, PSFK.com reports.
The work has been commissioned by the Arts Catalyst and shows two caravans in a shared space.
One of the vehicles is a static model from the 1970s which provides a way for lower-middle class families to escape from the property regimes of the city, the website states.
The second is camper van from the same era, which follows gypsies to produce a nomadic home.
Commenting on his work, the artist said: "The neighbour, neither friend nor enemy, is the one who may not be in your 'network', but is nevertheless in your world."
The website suggests that the exhibition aims to provoke visitors into questioning the modern day housing industry, as well as the theories of space and enclosure.
Last month saw a caravan sited in the capital's Sloane Square used as the setting for a play by the Look Left Look Right Theatre, which told the stories of families affected by the floods of 2007.
