Caravan owners urged to consider road regulations
Caravan insurance holders might want to ensure that their mobile home complies with road regulations to avoid incurring fines.
The Aberdeen Press and Journal is urging Britons thinking of heading away with their caravan to consider laws governing how drivers tow the vehicles and how much they can legally weigh.
For stability and safety, motorists should ensure that they do not exceed 85 per cent of the kerb weight of the tow car and should never go over 100 per cent, the publication states.
Additionally, drivers should ensure that if they are towing a caravan, they fit extension mirrors to enhance visibility, as the vehicles can cause obstructions. However, motorists should make sure that the mirrors do not extend beyond the vehicle by more than 200 mm.
Additionally, drivers should be aware that if they passed their test after January 1st 1997, they can only drive a vehicle with a maximum mass of 3,500kg. These motorists can legally tow a trailer of up to 750kg or more as long as the total mass does not exceed 3,500kg.
The National Caravan Council suggests that drivers consider weight when purchasing a caravan and urges motorists to ensure their car and trailer outfit matches so as not to incur fines from police for not complying with regulations.
