White van man wanted for thousands in fines

A driver in Edinburgh may have some trouble finding cheap van insurance, as he has one of the worst parking records in the whole of Scotland.

The man cannot be named by Edinburgh city council for legal reasons, but his white Ford Transit van has been slapped with 472 parking tickets in the last two years alone.

He has therefore racked up over £40,000 in unpaid fines, only having paid for a handful of his misdemeanours, according to the Glasgow Daily Record.

The van driver heads a most-wanted list of 12, who owe the council around £200,000 between them.

The drivers all have their vehicles impounded if caught, but as parking offences are no longer classed as criminal, they are only required to pay a release fee of £105 and a £30 fine each time to reclaim their vehicles.

The only way to make them pay is the long, drawn-out process of chasing them through the courts.

Andrew Burns, head of the city's transport authority, said of the fare-dodgers: "Nothing justifies their actions."

Sue Nicholson, RAC campaigns director, added: "People who flout the law in such a way are making it more difficult and expensive for ordinary motorists."

The best way to find cheap van insurance is to shop around, but keep your nose clean and you can also hold onto the all-important no-claims discount.
