Caravan owners offered purchasing advice

Buyers of cars or caravans should perhaps take note of a warning from HPI, which is to be wary of new vehicles which have had several owners in a short period of time.

The car history firm says this can mean a vehicle has "a shady history or persistent mechanical faults".

Previous owners are a valuable source of neutral information and the company encouraged buyers to make contact with them to get their views on the vehicle before purchasing.

An HPI check costs £19.99 and can offer reassurance to buyers that the car or caravan in question is not stolen, written off or subject to outstanding finance.

It can also supply the market value of the make and model in the enquiry.

HPI was formed in 1938 to combat the problem of fraudulent re-financing of motor vehicles.

It aims to provide information to private car buyers, car dealers, finance houses and the insurance industry.

In 1992 it cooperated with the National Caravan Council (NCC) to form the Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme (CRiS).

CRiS prevents and detects caravan crime through the issue of registration documents to owners.

All caravans produced by NCC members since 1992 have their details stored on a database through a unique 17-digit number.
